NCAA Division II Biola University will be adding men’s and women’s varsity water polo to its offerings in time for the 2020-2021 school year. The La Mirada, California school announced its decision on Tuesday on it’s official athletics web site.

Biola’s current teams compete in the PacWest Conference which does not sponsor water polo. The school is “considering other conference affiliations” with both the Western Water Polo Association and the Golden Coast Conference “on the table” according to the press release.

Senior Director of Athletics Dr. Bethany Miller hinted that “upcoming facility renovations” played a role in “invest[ing] in two new teams” along with “strong student interest.”

“Adding men’s and women’s water polo programs is a great fit for the direction of Athletics at Biola University,” she added.

Plans are under way to hire two head coaches, one for men and one for women, during the Spring of 2020. Water polo is the first intercollegiate sport added to Biola’s athletic offerings in over a decade.
