Elite Eight Division Added to CIF Southern Section Playoffs

The most competitive high school water polo conference in the U.S. will now feature the top eight teams in its season-ending championship tournament according to the OC Register. California’s CIF-Southern Section will debut the format this fall in which only select teams currently in Division 1 or 2 will be considered for the top-division final tourney.

Dan Albano explains:

Eight teams from a watch list of 26 contenders will be selected at the end of season based on power rankings and an advisory committee to participate in the new playoff division. The teams not selected head to a 32-team bracket in Division 2.

The list includes a who’s who of recent and traditional powers like Mater Dei, Harvard-Westlake, Orange Lutheran, Newport Harbor, Corona del Mar and Long Beach Wilson. The format will be used for the girls side next winter as well.

Albano narrates the video package covering the story.
