For the first time in a decade, the girls of Hawaii Prep secured its first Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) championships on Saturday. Ka Makani cruised to a 15-5 victory over Kealakehe, which pulled off a semi-final upset over perennial island powerhouse Kamehameha to reach the final.

With the win Hawaii Prep earned a bye to the quarterfinals at the HHSAA tournament, which will take place between May 1-6.

Since the state tournament started in 2004, a team from the BIIF has never won a title. Hawaii Prep (2007) and Hilo (2005) each have third place finishes on their resumes — best among Big Island squads. Kamehameha-Hawaii has had the most recent success, finishing fourth in 2011 and fifth last season.

Punahou has won all but two titles since the first HHAA championship began in 2004. Hawaii Prep’s best result was third in 2007.
