Varsity water polo is returning to Texas.

Austin College, located 60 miles north of Downtown Dallas, is hiring a coach for its men’s and women’s teams. Details of when the team will begin play are pending. The school’s athletic program competes at the NCAA Division III level.

The college made the decision in part to attract more aquatics athletes to the school, according to a person with knowledge of the process. The Kangaroos’ swim coach is Bob Filander, former water polo coach at Washington & Jefferson in Pennsylvania. The ‘Roos will compete in the CWPA according to the source.

The varsity program will be the first in the state since Texas A&M’s men’s program abandoned varsity status after competing in the 1976 NCAA Championship Tournament.
