Not unheard of in the US is the water polo family that re-locates to take advantage of the quality training opportunities widely available in the Golden State. Increasingly common, according the the Wall Street Journal, is taking the family overseas in search of that extra level of athletic schooling.

Fullerton, California’s Kelly Doherty, who has signed a letter of intent to play at Cal, has spent a year in Barcelona training with the well-known Barcelona International Water Polo Academy. She and her sister, Amanda, have enjoyed the experience enough that they will stay for one more.

But not without some of the dislocation hassles, often magnified by new languages and cultures, and not unique to water polo families. More about the Dohertys and several other families with similar experiences is detailed by the Journal.
