Day one of the 2016 men’s intercollegiate varsity season is in the books with dozens of matches from Rhode Island to San Diego. There were few surprises as the traditional powers continued to display why they’re on the top, and newcomers struggled. But the season will be an historic one with those new additions and a significant change in the way teams are organized across conferences. McKendree Water Polo Splits Inaugural Matches With LaSalle and Princeton University Men’s Water Polo
McKendree University men’s water polo began their inaugural season Saturday with a win against LaSalle University and a loss against Princeton University at the Navy Open in Annapolis, Md. The Bearcats started on a strong note by defeating LaSalle 16-8 before falling to Princeton, 18-6.

The Gauchos beat the Sagehens soundly 18-3 in the opener and later thumped the Falcons 20-11 to complete their Saturday sweep.

The Mids recorded an 11-6 victory over Iona to start their Saturday before closing it out with an 11-8 triumph over Gannon University. PROVIDENCE, RI. — The Wagner college men’s water polo team dropped its first game in program history, 14-5, at No. 13 Brown University Saturday morning in the 2016 Bruno Classic. The Seahawks return to action at 8:40 p.m. Saturday night when they face Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Devin O’Donnell recorded the program’s first-ever goal with 25 seconds remaining in the first quarter. O’Donnell was a major bright spot for the Seahawks as he would go on to score three more times in accounting for four of the Seahawks’ five goals. Trailing 9-1 at halftime, the Green & White won the first sprint of the second half before saving their best quarter for last as they outscored Brown 3-1 in the fourth. Freshman Matthew Miller recorded his first collegiate career goal to close the deficit to 14-3 before O’Donnell rounded out the scoring, notching his fourth and fifth goals of the contest, with 4:52 and 3:20 left to play in fashioning the final score at 14-5.

The No. 2 USC men’s water polo team pieced together a pair of powerful performances on opening day at the Triton Invitational. USC’s 2-0 start to 2016 came with a well-balanced start to the season, as the Trojans pinned up a 14-3 win over No. 8 UC Irvine and a 16-3 victory over No. 17 Cal Baptist in La Jolla. USC had nine different scorers strike the back of the net in each game, displaying the Trojans’ depth in this 2016 campaign.
