Prepsters Leave Youthful Mark on USA Olympic Water Polo Teams

Two of the youngest US Olympic water polo rosters in memory are now set.

Ben Hallock and Thomas Dunstan, June graduates of Harvard-Westlake and Mater Dei High Schools, were selected to the USA Men’s Olympic Team for Rio. The roster was announced from the deck of the USS Midway earlier on Thursday.

Hallock and Dunstan join Maddie Musselman (Corona del Mar, ’16) and Makenzie Fischer (Laguna Beach, ’17), high schoolers chosen for the women’s side on June 16.

The selection of two prep athletes to the men’s team confirms Head Coach Dejan Udovivic’s stated intent to promote young players to the senior roster. Dunstan, the first ever water polo Olympian from Connecticut, also fills the need for a left-hander on the team while Hallock has already impressed observers as a skilled center-forward. He will spell veteran John Mann in that role.

Rising super-star Ashleigh Johnson is the first Floridian to make an Olympic roster and anchors the women’s side as goalkeeper.

The team also features two young foreign-born players headed to their first Olympics: Luca Cupido (Italy) and Alex Roelse (Netherlands).

Brazil-born Tony Azevedo will return to his place of birth to compete at his fifth Olympic Games. He was selected as the team’s captain.
