Coronado Coach Burgess Announces Retirement

A 33-year stint as one of the most influential high school water polo coaches in the US is over.

Randy Burgess, who has steered the program at San Diego County’s Coronado High School announced his retirement after his Islander boys fell to CIF San Diego Section Open Division champs Cathedral Catholic on November 21.

Burgess won over 700 games and 16 section championships at Coronado, and led the 2000 and 2001 boys teams, considered by many to be the best in the country those years. He prepared dozens of athletes for the collegiate ranks, including three Olympians, Layne Beaubien, Genai Kerr and Jesse Smith.

2006 Coronado grad and UC Santa Barbara standout Sean Castillo appears to be slotted as Burgess’s replacement according to the Eagle & Journal.
