HIGHLIGHTS: Huntington Beach Returns to CIF-SS D1 Semis – OCVarsity

The favorites advanced in CIF Southern Section Division 1 boys water polo on an immensely busy Saturday. Mater Dei, Harvard-Westlake, and Loyola each earned spots in the division semifinals after mostly convincing wins. Not so easy for Huntington Beach which outlasted ever-improving Orange Lutheran to maintain its expected spot in the tournament.

The win puts the Oilers up against defending section champs and second-seeded Harvard-Westlake for the right to play for the title. More from OCVarsity.com’s Dan Albano including highlights.

Huntington Beach’s boys water polo team made the CIF-SS Division 1 semifinals last season for the first time since 1958. On Saturday, the Oilers showed no interest in giving up their spot in the semifinals showcase under the lights in Irvine.

Utility Ethan Wojciechowski scored from center 45 seconds into the second three-minute overtime and Curtis Jarvis made a steal at 2 meters with about 15 seconds left as third-seeded Huntington Beach defeated sixth-seed Orange Lutheran, 10-9, in an intense quarterfinal at Santiago Canyon College in Orange.
