HIGHLIGHTS: Mater Dei Ends Harvard-Westlake Water Polo Streak

After 50 games it appeared that the boys’ water polo team at Harvard-Westlake wouldn’t lose again. Their winning streak was impressive in itself, but so was the dominance they displayed on the way. Mater Dei ignored all of that on Wednesday and defeated their rivals 11-10 in Santa Ana, handing the Wolverines their first defeat since 2013.

OC Varsity’s Dan Albano was there to observe the historic win for the Monarchs.

Mater Dei’s zone defense held U.S. national center Ben Hallock to one shot from 2 meters, and the host Monarchs rode the momentum of a fast start to an 11-10 nonleague victory…

Not only had top-ranked Harvard-Westlake (13-1) defeated Mater Dei (12-1) in the past two CIF-SS Division 1 finals, the Wolverines had won six straight overall against the Monarchs during a 50-match winning streak…

The last of those six losses was a 12-3 defeat last month in the finals of the Santa Barbara tournament.

Highlights of the noisy matchup and post-game interviews with the victors by provided by Albano and the Daily News. Plus, extra coverage of the LA vs. Orange County rivalry, including photos, from the local scribes.
