HIGHLIGHTS: USA Women Cruise, Men Fend Off Italians at FINA Championships

The US women’s water polo team rebounded from a surprise loss to Italy in group play and soundly defeated Japan on Day 5 of action at the 16th FINA World Championships in Russia. Japan was held scoreless for the first half in en route to a 17-2 blowout win for the USA. Maggie Steffens led all scorers with four goals as the American women will now take on Hungary to open play in the elimination round.

On Day 6 the US men came back from an early three-goal deficit to beat Italy 11-9. Nikola Vavic led US scoring with three goals. The win puts the Americans second in their group with two wins and a loss to Greece. They will play Brazil, whom they defeated for a Pan American Games gold medal in June, on Sunday in their first elimination-round matchup.
