Regional and state rivalries abound among American water polo clubs especially in the run-up to the annual Junior Olympics tournament, a massive event held every summer.
More than 9,000 players and 700 teams – both records – are set to compete in the tournaments for boys, girls and co-ed teams…
With so many participating squads one would think that clubs from within an hour of one another wouldn’t be matched up. Not so for two of Michigan’s prominent and growing programs: Spartan Water Polo from Lansing and Rockford Water Polo. Athletes from those teams know each other well after the Michigan high school season and a their Midwest Zone qualifying tournament, and met yet again at the just completed 2015 Junior Olympics in Orange County, CA.
USA Water Polo produced this feature on the mostly-friendly rivalry and the players’ experiences both in their home state and on the West Coast.
