The first day of medal-round matches at the 2015 FINA Men’s World League Super Final produced perhaps the biggest upset of the tournament, and one of the most prominent wins by the USA men in years. After having gone winless in the group stage’s three games the Americans faced powerhouse Hungary, a match widely viewed as being un-winnable for the Stars and Stripes.
Instead, the US men stifled the Hungarian offense to reach a 3-0 lead at the outset, then later came back from a two-goal deficit to even and surpass the favorites. Tied very late in the game the outcome was determined in the tense last seconds of the contest. See the dramatic ending and the rest of the entertaining match as shown on Rai2 in Italy (in Italian – rarely do the names Bonanni and Cupido sound so good on TV).
The young American squad finished a very respectable fourth after a tense loss to Brazil in the bronze medal match. They will next head to Kazan for the 16th FINA World Championships beginning on July 26.
