Mountain View High School Head Coach Gabor Sarusi is now an assistant coach with the newly reconstituted San Jose State varsity men’s program. The Hungarian-born former USC standout will work under his former coach at West Valley College, Bruce Watson, who was named head coach of the Spartans in December.

San Jose State animated the American water polo community last August when it announced it would add a varsity men’s program to its offerings after a 30 plus-year hiatus becoming the first new Division I men’s team since Iona added one in the early eighties.

Sarusi led eighth-ranked Mountain View to a shocking upset of top-seeded Menlo-Atherton in the CIF-CCS quarterfinals last fall before falling in the semifinals. He made coaching stops at Loyola High School and his alma mater, West Valley College, before taking the helm at Mountain View. He was named to the All-Northern California First Team as a sophomore at West Valley where he helped the team win the Northern California Championship and reach the state’s junior college championship semifinals. He scored 17 goals for USC in his senior year including tallies in both the NCAA Championship semis and finals.

San Jose State will begin its season hosting nearby Santa Clara University on September 5th.
