On day 2 of the 4-nation tournament currently underway in Rome during the 52nd Settecolli the Croatians defeated USA 14-11 behind three goals each from Antonio Petkovic, Sandro Sukno, and Andelo Setka. The third quarter made the difference for the Croatian side who was leading 6-5 at half-time but got into the final period with a more comfortable 11-7 advantage.
Hosts Italy suffered another single-goal loss. After Friday’s one to Croatia, the following day Hungary held off the 2011 world champions. Decisively important in that victory for Hungary was Denes Varga’s eruption in the fourth quarter. The 2013 World player of the year scored all his three goals early in the fourth as it marked a run that proved too much for Italy to restore, although they came close. But Niccolo’ Gitto’s 2nd goal of the game, in the final seconds, came too late as Hungary held on for their second straight win and will play Croatia for the tournament victory on Sunday.
