A 6-2 lead at the end of the first quarter was barely enough for the USA women on Sunday. The Americans raced out to that lead against rivals Australia in the World League Super Final. The Stingers then mustered a fearsome comeback which only fell short by a goal, 8-7, handing the top-ranked US women another tournament gold medal.
The title keeps a tournament streak alive for Team USA. Last week they won the Kunshan Cup warmup versus The Netherlands for their second trophy of 2015 following their 2014 season which ended with three consecutive gold medals.
The two rivals could meet again in in Kazan at the end of July where the FINA World Championships will take place. More on Sunday’s outcome from Water Polo Australia.
The Aussie Stingers have almost pulled off one of water polo’s greatest comebacks before going down 8-7 to the USA in a thrilling gold medal match at the FINA World League Super Final in Shanghai.
The experienced USA team, the defending World League, World Cup and Olympic champions, got away to a blistering start, scoring twice inside the opening minutes and led 6-2 at quarter time.
