In July, New Trier’s Lauren Barrett is scheduled to travel to Hungary, where she will endure six weeks of training for water polo.
Hungary is considered the capital of the water polo world, according to New Trier girls water polo coach Matt Wendt. The men’s national team has won nine Olympic gold medals, and the women’s team owns two World Championship titles.
Wendt said Barrett, who started playing the sport in high school, is willing to do anything to make herself a better player. After not playing on varsity as a freshman, Barrett spent two summer months before her sophomore year working on her game in California with the San Diego Shores Water Polo Club. She went back to the West Coast club for another long stretch this past summer.
