More prep water polo history from the state of Illinois.
In 2003 the boys of Brother Rice and girls of Mother McAuley earned state championships. That was the last time Fenwick did not win a state title. Until this past Saturday.
The Illinois field is gradually becoming more diverse with Lyons and Stevenson the big winners in 2015. The Lyons boys surprised a highly competitive field, beating Naperville Central, St. Ignatius, and hosts Stevenson on the way to the trophy.
The Patriots girls completed a dominant undefeated season. It was their first championship and New Trier’s first ever appearance in the finals, adding yet more weight to the historic Saturday.
The key stories from the local press:
The semifinal blowout was a surprise because the team that lost by 14 rarely loses at all, but it wasn’t anything different than Stevenson had been doing all season.

Senior utility player Melissa Gartenberg yelled out in jubilation, which was promptly followed by a big exhalation. Safe to say, the wait was over as everything came to a head Saturday evening at Stevenson. “I don’t know what to say except the mission is complete,” Gartenberg said after the Stevenson girls water polo team put the exclamation point on a perfect 36-0 season with an 11-3 victory over New Trier in the state championship game. “I’m so speechless right now. This feels so good. We’ve worked so hard for this.”
