A back-and-forth affair between the two top girls’ seeds ended with a dramatic golden goal by North Penn in Saturday’s Pennsylvania State High School Water Polo Championships. The second-seeded Maidens led Governor Mifflin 9-6 early in the fourth period, but the Mustangs scored four to North Penn’s one in the remainder of regular time to tie the match at 10.
Two overtime periods weren’t enough, both teams knotted at 13. In sudden death North Penn missed a penalty throw that would have finished it, but soon recovered to score the winning goal in a 14-13 marathon.
The boys of Pennsylvania will attempt to repeat the drama of the girls’ tournament on Friday when their state championship tournaments will kick off.
