St. Charles’ Epic Comeback Produces Repeat Ohio Title

St. Charles Boys 2014 Ohio Prep Champs

The best result achieved by the Mason High School boys’ water polo team was a runners-up finish at the 2007 Ohio state championship. On Saturday the Comets were poised to bring the trophy home for the first time, leading defending champions St. Charles at the half of their title match, 9-3.

A six-goal lead was not enough.

The Cardinals stormed back with 10 goals in the second half to force a 13-13 tie. In overtime, two goals were sufficient to finally separate from Mason and complete the extraordinary comeback. The Cardinals won 15-14 and now have won four of the past five state championships.

The win keeps the title in the Columbus region. Boys’ teams from that area have won consecutive titles since 2006, when Cincinnati-area’s Milford last won the title for the territory.
