USC Roils Rankings with SoCal Tournament Title

USC avenged one of their two defeats – the September one-goal loss to Cal at the NorCal Challenge in September – by defeating the Bears in a rousing 10-9 shootout at the SoCal Tournament on Sunday. Both tourney finalists upset higher ranked squads on their way to the title match signaling a turnover in the rankings this coming week among the top four ranked teams.

All of them will now focus on the MPSF regular season now that the campaign’s major tournaments are complete. USC will next take on Stanford and Cal visits UCLA on the 18th, both matches scheduled for Pac-12 Network broadcast.

With the SoCal title the Trojans make a compelling case for ascending to the top spot from their current fourth position in the CWPA’s week six poll scheduled for this Wednesday. Even though losers to USC the Bears will also likely get top spot consideration having lost only twice all season, the first being to Stanford at NorCals.

Both top ranked UCLA and number two Stanford end the tournament with their second losses and are likely to fall in to the third and fourth spots in the week six polls.
