Missouri and Utah Prep Titles, Illinois and Michigan Regionals, This Weekend

  • The title match is set in Missouri where the top-ranked boys of St. Louis University High will take on rivals Parkway West on Saturday. Two years ago the Longhorns defeated SLUH for their first championship since 1984 and the first by a public school since 1999. In only the pre-season poll were the favored Jr. Bilikins not alone atop Missouri’s rankings (they shared top billing with Parkway West). The consolation match features annual contenders MICDS against a surprising John Burroughs team. The sixth-ranked Bombers surprised DeSmet to reach the semifinals where they fell to Parkway West. Both the consolation and championship matches will be streamed live at prepcasts.com.
  • Both the boys and girls of Kearns earned top seeds for Utah’s state championships which will also be decided on Saturday at Kearns Oquirrh Park Fitness Center. The last time the boys did not win the state varsity title was 2004. Results are available at utahwaterpolo.com.
  • Sectionals in Illinois often produce the most surprising results of the post season. They are fully under way this weekend with those championships to be decided on Saturday. Sectional winners go on to next weekend’s state championships. Of note: the boys of Fenwick are ranked third in the state and face rivals Lyons, who toppled the Friars on the way to a state title in 2012, in their sectional title match. The Naperville North boys and Fenwick girls are on top of Illpolo.com‘s rankings. Check out that site for copious coverage of all things related to Illinois prep water polo.
  • Rockford, Zeeland, Okemos and Huron emerged from their district tournaments as top seeds for the girls’ West and East Region Championships in Michigan, which round out a busy weekend of prep water polo in the Midwest. The top four from each region, which will be decided today, will go on to play in the final championship tournament of the spring in Saline on May 30-31.
