With two weeks of competition already in the record books, the 2014 women’s collegiate season is well under way as many top squads convene in Santa Barbara for UCSB’s Winter Invite tournament beginning today and winding down on Sunday (see the schedule here).
The Gauchos occupy the 17th spot in the latest CWPA rankings and will look to improve on it under Director of Men’s and Women’s Water Polo Wolf Wigo who takes over day-to-day coaching duties after a two-year hiatus. The school selected Cathy Neushul to fill that role in 2011, but she was quietly removed as head coach after two seasons with consecutive 20-15 records.
News of Neushul’s departure prompted an online petition last September to have her and assistant coach Connor Levoff reinstated. The effort produced 350 signatures as of the end of 2013.
Wigo’s assistant coaches for the 2014 season are Ryan McMillan, also on his men’s team staff, and former UCSB poloist Rachel Nelson.
In addition to the Gauchos the Winter Invite field includes top squads such as Arizona State, UCLA, Cal, and UC Irvine.
