Azevedo, Reports, Say Rudic May Be Negotiating Brazil Head Position

Ratko Rudic, legendary Croatian coach and former head of the US National Team, is heading to Brazil in the coming week to discuss a similar position with the Brazil National Team according to Croatian publication JutarnijiLIST in a story published on Tuesday, this after a flurry of social media commentary on the subject last Sunday. The buzz prompted a WaterPoloWorld story in which Tony Azevedo was said to have announced Rudic’s intent to fly to Brazil to take the meeting with its water polo organizing committee.

Azevedo is now ensconced with the Sao Paolo-based club SESI after playing in the LEN European Championship for Croatia’s Jug Dobrovnik last season. The USA captain was born in Brazil and maintains strong family ties in the country.

Brazil appears to be making a strong attempt at fielding a quickly improved national program, partially by importing European talent, such as former Rijeka center Josip Vrlić who received Brazilian citizenship last summer, and Spanish national center Felipe Perrone, who is originally from Brazil. The addition of Rudic as head coach would presumably bring yet more credibility and quality to the burgeoning program as they prepare to host the 2013 Olympic Games.
