An April 2013 announcement by the Orange County Register that it would be implementing a paywall for its online news website presaged today’s news that it’s renowned prep sports blog, OCVarsity.com, would do the same. Beginning Thursday afternoon readers will be required to register and pay for content, including its coverage of water polo.
OCVarsity.com and its prolific writer Dan Albano have been, arguably, the most important sources of water polo journalism in the US for well more than a decade. Based in what is widely acknowledged to be the center of American youth water polo, Albano has provided broad coverage of both boys and girls prep water polo in Orange County, and often expanded his portfolio to include news about the USA National Team, based in Los Alamitos and Huntington Beach, and the collegiate game.
Non-subscribers will still have access to the first 80 words of each article. Details regarding registration and fees are included in today’s announcement on OCVarsity.com. The CIF Southern Section season, which includes Orange County schools, begins on September 2nd.
