USA Men’s Coaching Choice Nears, Albano’s Polo History, Azevedo’s International Players’ Group

An uncommon focus on senior level and international water polo today…

  • @NCAA_Water_Polo tweeted yesterday that Dejan Udovicic was USA Water Polo’s choice for men’s senior national team head coach. Several sources tell TWp that the final selection will be either the well-known Serbian or Gavin Arroyo with Udovicic likely to get the nod. The announcement should come by tomorrow and perhaps as early as today.
  • The prolific Dan Albano shared his fascinating introduction to water polo in Orange County as a long-time scribe with the Register. In Greg Mescall’s latest “The Counterattack” podcast the two cover the most recent girls’ high school season, the Mater Dei juggernaut, and how social media is changing coverage of the sport.
  • American superstar Tony Azevedo spoke with TWp this morning about the foundation of the Water Polo Players Organization, an new advocacy group for athletes. The US National Team captain has recruited an impressive group of international stars to found the group which is dedicated to reversing the decline of water polo in Europe, increasing the number of Americans playing in Europe, and offering guidance to players interested in professional contracts.
