Sources: Vavic Not To Continue as USMNT Coach

Jovan Vavic will not continue as head coach of the US Men’s Senior National Team according to sources familiar with the situation. Three prominent Europeans and a surprising Californian are finalists for the top job. An announcement from USA Water Polo could come as early as Tuesday regarding the man who fills the position.

Vavic was hired by USA Water Polo last fall on an interim basis to head the squad through Fina qualifying matches, which took place in February. The young American team placed second to Canada at the UANA Qualification Tournament in Calgary to successfully earn a spot in this summer’s Fina World Championships in Barcelona.

The four finalists for the full-time position, according to sources, are former Hungarian national team coach Zoltan Kasas, Montenegro’s national team coach Ranko Perovic, former Serbian national team coach Dejan Udovicic, and Olympic Club men’s coach Bruce Watson.

Update: An earlier version of this story erroneously mentioned Zoltan Kasas and Ranko Perovic as finalists for the USA Men’s National Team head coaching position. Also, Bruce Watson was interviewed for the positon but is not considered a finalist. Update forthcoming.
