Monmouth (IL) College has officially announced what has been widely reported at Total Waterpolo and elsewhere that it will offer varsity men’s and women’s water polo beginning this coming fall. Slated to compete in the CWPA the men’s team is currently making competition plans for this coming season, including travel to tournaments. The women will not begin competition until the spring of 2014.
No word yet on any decision regarding head coaches for either the men’s or women’s teams. Alex de la Pena, the Scots swim coach and head of aquatics sports, has been instrumental in promoting the sport to varsity status according to Tony Marino, player/coach of the Division III men’s club champions, and will likely play a role in the hire. The addition of two new varsity teams comes as good news after Colorado State announced the cancellation of its nine-year-old women’s varsity squad last week.
