FINA has announced that the Stanford Cardinal women’s team is home to the best player in the world, Maggie Steffens (her currently-empty bio on the Stanford site should be easy to fill). Croatia’s Josep Pavic earned the mens’ award for 2012.

Waterpolo World’s recent piece on European recruits to American college programs was rightfully impressed with the talent heading stateside. But defending champion Stanford’s nearly-exclusively American roster, studded with Olympians Steffens and Melissa Seidemann, is still widely considered the favorite to repeat as NCAA champions. Steffens makes her collegiate debut for the Cardinal against Michigan on January 25 at the Avery Aquatic Center.
